Defining Your Position In The Small Business Marketplace – Episode 9

In this episode we will discuss four ways you can easily start positioning your business. Creating a position in the marketplace is very important as it allows you to cut through some of the massive sameness that exists in most local communities.

The four areas you can create marketing leverage is in your Titles, Price, Image, Expert Status.

Staking small business positioning through Titles:

The title of your business can help identify your business as a specialist in an area and it allows new and prospective clients to know what category to place your business. Once your business is placed in category in the customers mind, you have created an anchor in their mind and you are more likely to be remembered if someone ever asks about the category or if they have a need in that area.

You can also add positioning by naming your processes. Your welcome process, your workflow, or guarantee all help to place hooks in your customers mind to allow you to have better positioning in the marketing place. Everyone else may come and clean carpets, but your “12 Point Floor Reconditioning System” sounds like you will do a better job, even though that is just what you call you call your clean carpets.

Staking your Positioning through Price:

Competing solely on price is a losing battle, even though many people often choose to play that game. In the episode I point out the many times a the lack of education on our part about customer buying habits and lack of education of you customer about your business forces them to purchase by price but listen to the episode to find out the true facts about pricing and how you often have more flexibility then you realize.

Staking your Positioning through Image:

Many decisions to buy or not to by are made through the perception that is inside the client’s mind. Image is really a question of congruence. Are you matching the image of success. I talk about the right way to look at image position in order to be successful.

Staking your positioning though Expert Status:

Does it take 10,000 hours like Mr Gladwell claims in his book Outliers, or is it reading three or more books like Dan Miller suggests to become skilled and in may respects an expert in a topic. What does it take to position yourself as an expert. In will give you a hint, it takes determination, experience and results. In the podcast I talk about the benefits of expert positiong.
